The Vietnam War ended in 1975. The Vietnamese refugees were called Vietnamese boat people. It refers to the refugees who escaped from Vietnam by boat and ship. During 1975 and 1995, the number of Vietnamese boat people amounted to 80 thousand. These boat people finally arrived at other country. The main countries they chose to shelter were “Southeast Asian countries of Hong Kong (then a British crown colony), Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand”.
American army also involved in the Vietnam War. Therefore, it is reasonable that the Vietnamese refugees were initially resented Americans. In 1975, “President Gerald Ford and Congress passed the Indochina Migration and Refugee Assistance Act”. This act allowed the Vietnamese refugees to access to the US and provided $405 million for resettlement. Many Vietnamese refugees were assigned to different districts of the nation. The purpose was to prevent them from affecting local communities deeply and forming ethnic domain.
